Asheboro |
|
In 1989, Sears replaced the Catalog Sales Office on Sunset
Avenue in Asheboro with a retail store in the new Randolph Mall. |

|
The first store in Asheville opened in 1928. Sears relocated
this store in 1933, 1948, and 1969. In 1995 Sears renovated the
retail store at Ashville Mall. Soap opera star Kurt McKinney and
basketball player Spud Webb joined the festivities. |

Burlington |
|
The first Sears store in Burlington opened in 1941. In 1993
Sears completed the renovation of its Holly Hill Mall store
site. Originally built in 1969, the renovation included a major
increase in the size of the apparel departments. Wider aisles,
softer lighting, new carpeting and new merchandise display
fixtures were included in the redesigned store. |

Charlotte |
|
Sears opened its first store in Charlotte in 1929, the same
year the stock market crashed. In 1949 Sears relocated the
Charlotte store by opening a large retail store in another
section of the downtown shopping district. Sears stores opened
in Gastonia in 1953, Rock Hill in 1968, Concord in 1969,
Southpark mall in 1970 and Eastland mall in 1979. In 1989 Sears
operated two large department stores in the two major enclosed
shopping centers near Charlotte including the University Place
Mall. Sears employees thousands of Charlotte residents, and
purchases millions of dollars of goods from over 400 local
manufacturers. |

Durham |
|
The first Sears store in Durham opened in 1934 at Five
Points. Sears relocated the store in 1947. In 1973 Sears opened
a large retail store in the Northgate Shopping Center. In 1986
Sears reopened its remodeled store. The store’s new design
reflects the incorporation of over 600 display modifications,
which brought together related products into shops, which
reflect customer’s lifestyles. |

|
Morehead City is situation on North Carolina’s Crystal
Coast on the Eastern Banks for the state. Sears opened a Catalog
Sales Office in 1952. In 1989 Sears opened a retail store in the
Cypress Bay Plaza. |

Bern |
|
In 1986 Sears opened a retail store in New Berne. Prior to
this a Catalog Sales Office in the Neuse Village Shopping center
served residents. The new store was one of the first in a series
of retail stores Sears introduced in smaller communities. In
1993 Sears closed the retail store in the Berne Square Shopping
Center as part of a major restructuring. |

Pineville |
|
In 1991, Sears opened a new "superstore" in the
Carolina Place Mall in Pineville. Miss North Carolina helped
present a fashion show when the store opened. The Pineville area
serves the greater Charlotte metropolitan region. This store
represented the third major Sears store servicing the greater
Charlotte area.

Raleigh |
|
The first store opened in 1951. Sears relocated this store in
1981. In 1991 Sears opened a retail store in the Cary Towne
Center. The opening ceremonies included a visit by daytime
television star Jeff Trachta and a daylong fashion show. In 1994
Sears opened a department store in Crabtree Valley Mall. |

Roanoke
Rapids |
|
Prior to the mid 1980s, Sears served the Roanoke Rapids
community with a Catalog Sales Office in the Oakland Shopping
Center. In 1988 Sears built a large department store at the
Oakland Shopping Center, then closed it in 1993 as part of a
major restructuring. |

Rocky
Mount |
|
In the early 1980s, the Cummins Engine Company and the Case
Power and Equipment Company announced they would build a
joint-venture industrial complex in Rocky Mount. To meet the
increased demand for merchandise, Sears expanded its retail
store in the community by opening a new store in the Golden East
Crossing Mall. The new store replaced the smaller store on North
Church Street originally opened in 1951, and remodeled in 1958.
This store suffered from inadequate parking, and an old physical
structure. |

Salisbury |
|
A 100,000-square-foot "store of superstores" Sears
department store opened in Salisbury. Sears chose Salisbury to
build one of the new concepts in part because of the success of
the small Sears catalog store in the local Town Mall shopping
center. The new store of superstores includes a ten-bay
automotive and light truck center, photo studio, hair salon,
optical shop, hearing aid center, an Allstate Insurance office,
a Sears Product Services Center and a catalog sales department. |

Shelby |
|
In 1994 Sears opened a new store in the Cleveland Mall. This
store replaced the old downtown Shelby store located on West
Warren Street that originally opened in 1951. |

Statesville |
|
In October 1997 Sears, which was the number one store
requested by mall customers, opened a store in the Signal Hill
Mall. In addition to bringing shopping convenience for area
customers, 80 new jobs were created and a significant addition
to the local tax revenue added. To help with the festivities
NASCAR driver Johnny Benson and soap stars Kelly Ripa and Ryan
McNeil made appearances during the opening weekend. Sears
donated $2,000 to the Iredell Cancer Fund during the grand
opening celebration. |

|
First store opened in 1928, and relocated in 1938, 1964, and

|
The first store opened in 1928 and relocated in 1948. In 1976
Sears opened a new store in the Hanes Mall, which incorporated
new design elements and presentation concepts. This new store
reflected Sears ongoing store planning, fixtures and
merchandising programs. In the 1970s trends such as a more
subtler approach in wall décor and point-of-sale graphics, a
greater emphasis on using the merchandise, rather than the
décor, to make the product presentations more exciting, and a
greater flexibility to expand, contract or move departments
through store design. |
