Q. My mother has a jumper that my grandmother made for her when she was a little girl. It is made from a very cute fabric that has little dogs printed all over it. My mother swears she remembers picking this fabric out of a catalog and that it was her favorite dress for years. Did Sears sell fabric and sewing goods in the catalog? This would have been in the late 1930s or early 1940s.
A. Sears did sell fabrics, patterns, and sewing notions through the catalogs and the stores for many years. We searched through the catalogs, and we believe we even found the fabric pattern you described; it is on page 474 of the fall 1938 Chicago edition catalog.
